Price references and market hours

How Rind uses Chainlink feeds, the 60-second freshness rule, and what market open means for US equities.

A trailing stop is only as good as the price it reads. Rind uses one reference price during market hours and refuses to act on a stale one.

The market-hours reference

During the US regular session, the reference price for each Stock Token is its Chainlink price feed on Robinhood Chain. Every observation is checked before use.

CheckRule
FreshnessThe feed update must be less than 60 seconds old
Market stateThe US regular session must be open
Token stateThe Stock Token must not be paused or frozen by its issuer
SanityThe price must be positive and within the feed's reported bounds

If any check fails, the observation is skipped. The high-water mark does not move and the stop does not fire on that observation.

What market open means

Rind follows the regular trading session of the primary US exchanges.

  • Regular session: 9:30 to 16:00 Eastern Time, Monday to Friday.
  • Holidays: the exchange holiday calendar. On a full holiday the market is treated as closed all day.
  • Early closes: on scheduled half days, usually around Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, the session ends at 13:00 ET.
  • Daylight saving: times are in Eastern Time, so the UTC window shifts by one hour in spring and autumn.

Pre-market and after-hours sessions are treated as closed. Liquidity is thinner then, and the reference feed does not track them the same way.

What happens at the freeze

When the regular session ends, the Chainlink feed stops updating with new exchange prices. Its last value stays on-chain. After 60 seconds it is stale.

From that point, a position without Night mode sleeps:

  • No new observations are taken.
  • The high-water mark is preserved exactly as it was at the close.
  • The stop cannot fire, even if the on-chain pool price moves.

At the next open, the first fresh feed update is used. If it opens below your trigger, the stop fires on that first observation and the sale fills at the available price.

A gap at the open is the main reason a stop can fill below its trigger. Night mode exists to give you the choice of watching through the night instead.

Night mode

If you enable Night mode on a position, Rind switches to a 30-minute Uniswap TWAP while the market is closed, and widens your drop by 3 points. See Night mode.
